Shipyard Plantation is located on the south end of the Island and encompasses 800 acres and includes over 2000 single family homes, villa residences and rental properties. Although situated near the beach, it does not actually have any ocean front homes or villas, but it is one of only four gated communities offering direct ocean access. In addition, pools can be found in all visitor areas (villas) as well as most private homes.

Shipyard, known as being both a residential as well as a resort community, offers a full spectrum of amenities with three 9 hole golf courses, The Shipyard Racquet Club (Van Der Meer), The Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza, the only commercial enterprise in Shipyard and an amazing array of bike trails. Villas are the major rental unit in Shipyard although there are a few vacation homes. Adjacent to the Crown Plaza, Shipyard has a private beach club and reserved parking for the resort's guests. Bicycling is very popular in Shipyard, and there are more than twelve miles of bike paths.
